Spindle Whorl - Italy, 1st Century AD This
ancient Roman drop spindle whorl is carved from black stone and is
25 mm in diameter. Spindle whorls of this type were the weights for
spinning thread by hand, an activity which could be done almost
anywhere, like knitting today. Spinning and weaving were considered
virtuous work of Roman women, and it was done even by the wives of

Samian Ware Pottery Shard , Britain, 1st Century AD
This shard of pottery is from a Samian (redware) bowl dating from
the early Empire in the 1st Century AD. The rim and curve of the
bowl can be seen, as well as lines from the potter's wheel. It
measures 47mm at it's widest point, and is 37mm in height. The glaze
is in great shape and shows the high quality of work.
